R!P: a rem!x man!f3st0

After watching RIP: A Remix Manifesto, it gave me a new perspective of all the new genres of music being developed in this day and age. I think that with the growth of MySpace and other music blogging websites, the music industry has changed a lot. Before the rapid inflation of the internet, music was bought as either a C.D a Cassette or in Vinyl form. With mp3 downloads and burned CD's we are now accepting a much lower quality of music to listen to compared to how music used to be. Blogging sites and MySpace may be partially to blame because of the lack in quality in new music, however they are also responsible for allowing us to share our music and helps people in bands spread their music around the world, gaining popularity and usually after that comes money. It is much easier to become a musician nowadays but I think when it comes to being a successful musician, it has only become more difficult. With so many people sharing their music on the internet it is more prone to criticism and competition from other bands and artists. A good example of this competition is Youtube, there are over 120,000,000 videos up, with a great majority of them being music videos, now with all those videos there have to be some that are similar and out of those two one that is better than the other. This can easily be seen in DJ’s on Youtube. Some specific DJ’s that come to mind are:
http://www.youtube.com/user/BassnectarLabs one of the better DJ’s on Youtube today.
Compared to: http://www.youtube.com/user/EyessTV which is also good, yet quite similar to Bassnectar and less popular.

CitizenKaneInTheMembrane

Before we watched Citizen Kane in class I had already seen it once before when I was younger so I remembered a bit of the plot but I think re watching it helped me better understand it. I believe the film really was a masterpiece, the plot line and story of the movie is what makes it great. Most movies have a very blunt and straight forward story that begins with a problem and ends in a solution, clearly stating both. In Citizen Kane the solution and problem is more implicit since it is not clearly stated you have to place close attention while watching the film. To catch on to how and what "Rose Bud" really means and its importance to Kane, you need to look closely at the details of this film, using not only your eyes to watch and ears to listen but your mind as well to think about it and put the movie together. I think this movie deserves all the honour it receives, without it we may not have many modern day movies today. Citizen Kane reminded me a lot of the movie inception, most likely because it made you think. Maybe Inception was even based on this movie, we never know. Citizen Kane’s story line paved the way for movies today and helped make it a classic film.

bl00d f3ast

Instead of doing a music video analysis I chose to do a movie trailer analysis. This movie was directed by H.G Lewis and is called “Blood Feast”. Blood Feast is an old gore movie that presents reality as very dark and satanic. It is presented this way because at this point in time this genre was very new and this would be seen as appealing to viewers. Stereotypes and symbols this video uses is blood (obviously) as a symbol for evil, and death, as well as the stereotype that women are weaker than males. Creed and values expressed in this video are that it is ok to kill people...it definitely isn’t. This video would appeal to teenagers because there is blood, and a lot of it at that. Teenagers enjoy seeing people hurt so this would make Blood Feast very appealing. Overall it is not the best movie trailer ever made but it is one of my favourites and a classic in the gore genre.

MeDiA

I believe that media is very important in my life. The media's influence is everywhere whether you acknowledge it or not. For the most part I embrace media but I try to stay away from the bad media that is all about celebrity gossip. The media types that I feel are most important to me are music and movies. I have many songs on my iPod and listen to it everyday. Music is a large part of my life. Another type of media that I am passionate about is movies. I love movies, especially horror movies. I watch at least 3 movies a week and have always wanted to direct a movie. In my opinion modern pop culture is a bit unnecessary. I enjoy new technology but I find that we are too involved with the online world and technology. I think that the amount of technology kids have access to now is ridiculous and that it is corrupting youth. I use media for entertainment and sometimes educational uses. I usually use it for entertainment though, like watching movies, or listening to music.

Favourite Movie: My favourite movie is either The Shining or The Social Network. I can't decide between the two because both movies are very different genres and from different eras. The Shining is a 1980's horror movie about a family who moves into a hotel only to have the father become possessed and attempt to kill his wife and son. I enjoy this movie because although it is old it is still entertaining and is a classic movie when it comes to the horror genre. I like the movie The Social Network because it shows the developement of the Facebook website and the challenges that came along while creating the site as well as the influence of facebook on society.

My Favourite Video Game: I love the original version Pacman game for the Nintendo 64 Game System. Pacman is a fun yet simple game where the goal is to eat as many dots as possible without running into any of the ghosts (Pinky, Inky Etc.) It is a very amusing game.

My Favourite Album: This was hard to decide because I love music but I think it would be a tie between Paramore's two albums; Brand New Eyes and All We Know is Falling. I like these two albums because I like every song on the album where with most artists I enjoy a song or two but not the entire album.
